Aeration

Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil from the lawn. This relieves compacted soil and lets water, air, and fertilizer reach the roots. It helps most on lawns with heavy foot traffic, thatch, or clay soil, and much of central Indiana has clay soil.

Overseeding

Overseeding spreads new grass seed over an existing lawn to fill thin and bare areas and thicken the turf. Seed placed right after aeration makes better contact with the soil.

Best timing

For cool-season grasses, late August through September is the best window. The soil is still warm, nights are cooler, and there is less weed competition than in spring. Spring seeding can work, but crabgrass and summer heat make it harder.

After seeding

New seed needs steady moisture until it is established. Keep the mower blade high once the new grass is tall enough to cut. Avoid crabgrass pre-emergent on seeded areas, since it blocks new seed from sprouting. See fertilization and turf care.
