Fertilization and turf care

Fertilization

Cool-season lawns, which is what most central Indiana yards have, benefit most from feeding in the fall, when the grass is rebuilding roots after summer. A spring feeding supports growth as the weather warms. Timing and amount matter more than simply adding more fertilizer, since too much can burn a lawn or wash into storm drains.

Weed control

Weeds fall into two groups. Crabgrass is a summer annual that is controlled in spring by a pre-emergent applied before the seeds sprout, usually when soil temperatures reach about 55 degrees. Broadleaf weeds such as dandelion and clover are treated after they appear, and fall is an effective time to do it. A thick lawn is the best long-term defense, so fertilization, mowing height, and weed control work together.

Planning around seeding

Spring pre-emergent products stop grass seed from sprouting too. If you plan to overseed, tell us first so the two are timed correctly. See aeration and overseeding.
